General Council Information

Columbia Student Medical Outreach (CoSMO) clinic is a free, student-run clinic that provides essential primary care and behavioral health services to undocumented and uninsured adult patients in Manhattan. Clinic operates out of the Urgicare Center space at 21 Audubon on Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings.

Our mission is threefold: to provide comprehensive and multidisciplinary care, promote community outreach, and foster student education, service, and innovation.

GENERAL COUNCIL POSITIONS:
1) Associate Coordinator (AC) Chair
– Trains and manages team of associate coordinators
– Must be an AC as your clinical role
– Must be fluent in Spanish

2) Behavioral Health Co-Chair
– Work directly with the Behavioral Health Chair to coordinate all aspects of BH clinic, including day-to-day operations, finances, volunteer management, and patient care
– Excellent for students interested in psychiatry and mental health in general

3) Community Relations and Social Work Chair
– Actively seek and maintain connections with programs in the community where CoSMO patients can be served and integrate into the community (diabetes support groups, mental healthcare, exercise etc.)
– Act as liaison to head of the NYP Social Work Department and school of Social Work
– Work to help patients get access to government and community resources such as food stamps, subsidized childcare, soup kitchens, and insurance

4) Events Chair
– Coordinate fundraising events
– Plan annual volunteer appreciation dinner
– Help plan other CoSMO events such as informal social events and community engagement events

5) Finance Chair
– Monitor the CoSMO budget and relay financial information to the general council
– Maintain the finance spreadsheet, including keeping track of cost and revenue sources
– Constant communication with Fundraising Chair to guide fundraising goals

6) Fundraising Chair
– Seek out and propose new funding sources for CoSMO, including new grant funding opportunities
– Renew grant funding from organizations with which CoSMO has an existing relationship (e.g. Gilead)
– Maintaining current fundraising operations including the following: Amazon link, friends and family donation campaigns, Alumni office mailers, etc.

7) Health Education Chair
– Recruit and train health coach volunteers from all health science schools
– Plan health education events for patients at CoSMO
– Must be a Health Coach as your clinical role
– Plan monthly Health Education meeting for quality improvement of Health Coach Program

8) Human Resources Chair – Attendings
– CoSMO’s primary liaison between the clinic and volunteer attending physicians
– Ensure that clinic is staffed by an attending physician each week
– Relay information between attendings and the CoSMO Chairs
– Publicize CoSMO at Department of Medicine General Council meetings
– Brainstorm new and creative ideas for recruiting new physicians

9) Human Resources Chair – Students
– CoSMO’s primary liaison between the clinic and student volunteers across all disciplines
– Ensure that clinic is staffed with student volunteers each week
– Ensure that students get signed up for CoSMO at the beginning of each semester
– Promote CoSMO at student club fairs

10) Information Technology Chair
– Maintain and support CoSMO’s two websites: Sharepoint, WordPress, custom ASP
– Help design and implement new IT initiatives to improve clinic efficiency
– Liaison between CoSMO and CUMC IT

11) Institutional Relations Chair
– Advocate for patients in terms of billing and referrals to specialty services
– Follow up on referrals made in clinic to ensure that each patient receives and attends an appointment
– Reach out to departments to draw up contracts for donated appointments (waivers, reduced, fee-scaled, etc.)
– Handle patient bills from referrals brought to clinic

12) Operations Chair
– Plan general council meetings and other leadership events, including scheduling and booking space
– Take minutes at meetings
– Manage communication with general council and volunteers including soliciting feedback, managing the list serve, etc

13) Pharmacy Chair
– Maintain the clinic prescription formulary spreadsheet
– Research new ways for the clinic to save money on medications
– Communicate with pharmacies to negotiate lower prices for prescriptions
– Monitor for excessive pharmacy spending or off-formulary spending

14) Student Education Chair
– Improve student education and awareness at CoSMO by creating educational events for volunteers (ex: grand rounds on a primary care topic, how to conduct a motivational interview)
– Help develop training resources and guidelines for CoSMO volunteers
